#sms20 Pona Jacket Review

**Disclaimer: As one of the leaders for Sew My Style 2020  I am obligated to write two blog posts on the patterns assigned for my month. Patterns are gifted for leaders but all opinions and text you find here are of my own and honest. In this blog post specifically, the materials used are NOT sponsored.

Here is my review on the Pona Jacket by Helen’s Closet rapid-fire style.

Pattern:

The pattern (Pona Jacket by Helens Closet) is described as an oversized jacket. Has an off the shoulder seam line and I would describe it as a casual lightweight jacket. This pattern had two views, one long length that hits at mid-thigh and the second a cropped look hitting around the high hip.  There are no closures for the jacket.

Fabric used:

The patterns suggest a light to medium weight woven. I used a nonstretch cotton sateen in olive green. (Source unknown).

Personal adjustments:

After measuring and checking the pattern like I described in my previous post. There seemed to be no adjustments needed.

Thoughts on sizing:

The overall fit of the pattern is exactly as described in the pattern. The pattern has you choose a size based on high bust measurement which I totally agree with. Love the size range and appreciate all the details explaining the intended fit.

How many pattern pieces:

There is a front, back, and sleeve. Two facings. The back-facing requires interfacing but not the front. The front is pretty wide so I can see how it would be suggested not to. Pocket piece and collar.

Construction:

This is the easiest jacket to construct since there is no lining, no set-in sleeves, and minimal pattern pieces. This can easily be constructed within a few hours or a day. If you are a confident sewer, it’s possible to get by not having to read the instructions so diligently.

What was the hardest part of the pattern:

Absolutely nothing. The instructions were detailed and easy to understand. Illustrations were clear and detailed. One thing I wished they would have listed was different ways to finish the seams since this jacket has no lining.

What I did differently:

Nothing I did exactly what was instructed by the pattern. I agreed with most of the sewing techniques.

What did I like/dislike about the pattern:

I liked everything about the pattern from the printing and assembly of the pattern to the sewing instructions. There is nothing I disliked.

Opinions on drafting/pattern making:

Overall I thought the pattern making is great. I appreciate the correct annotated notches and grainline placements. One thing I wish I could see on the pattern though is the major fit point (waist and bust) and center front labeled.

Overall opinion

I love this pattern and its the easiest, quickest jacket pattern you would make. I would highly reccommend beginner sewist to try this jacket out if they are wanting to dive into coats and jackets. This is a great starting point and anyone can breeze through this pattern quickly.
